"Renew" plan injects £22 million
Theatre transport has been furnishing productions of West Sussex's Chichester Festival Theatre ever since the venue opened its doors to its inaugural show in 1962.
And it looks like theatre transport will be continuing its relationship with West Sussex's premiere theatre for quite a bit longer, following news of the £22 million "Renew" plan which will see major work on the half-century-old building.
Around £1.5 million of this £22 million fund will come from a major infrastructure and development package, which will be provided by West Sussex County Council and will, hopefully, inject around £50 million back into the county's economy.
Lionel Barnard, deputy leader of the County Council comments, "The theatre has an international reputation, and is also important in terms of tourism. The Grade II Listed building is no longer fit for purpose. The 'Renew' proposal includes using construction contractors and associated services from the local area subject to the tender process, and expanding its work experience placements and youth theatre training programme."
Last year's major shows at the festival theatre included musicals Singin' in the Rain and Sweeney Todd – theatre transport in West Sussex will soon get to here details about the major shows scheduled for next summer.
