Theatre transport for gritty UK opera, Greek
Touring the UK, the Music Theatre Wales (MTW) seems to have put the gritty opera Greek on stage again just in time.
The opera, based on a play by Steven Berkoff and transformed into an opera by Mark-Anthony Turnage, hails from 1988 and is set in Thatcherite Britain.
The riots in the inner cities of 1980 may seem far off for many people now, but with the recent riots in London and other cities and towns in the UK the play may manage to strike a cord with those who are too young to remember the miner's strikes and general unrest of 30-odd years ago.
However, the play wouldn't manage to strike a cord with many people around the country if it weren't for the transport used to carry lighting and set pieces to the ten different tour locations until the 10th of November.
Without all the technicalities of the production in place, the efforts of the four actors and actresses would perhaps be overshadowed by the empty stage and the fact the theatre house lights would have to be kept on throughout the performance.
Where would theatre productions be if they had no way of transporting sets to a new destination.
