Report raises erosion fears
There is a concern that the next 10 to 15 years could see specialist transport being needed to remove many homes from the Littlehampton coastline.
This worry comes after a study by the Environment Agency revealed that there are more than 10 miles of Sussex coastline that are at risk from severe erosion, with as much as 20 metres of land in danger at some places.
Already, many residents are looking to sell up over fears that their houses could be threatened by erosion and rising sea levels – while those with movable homes and caravans may start to look into the possibility of contracting specialist transport to move them out of Littlehampton.
A Sussex MP commented, "The climate change chickens are coming home to roost.
"There has always been erosion but it has now accelerated," he added.
And there are very real fears that the process of erosion is now inevitable and that those who will be able to ask specialist transport to move their homes out of Littlehampton will be the lucky ones.
"Coastal erosion is a natural process and while we can't defend every single section of cliff or beach, there are some practical steps that will help people plan ahead and adapt for the future." said the environment minister.
